柳·乌利茨卡娅，生于乌拉尔一个犹太知识分子的家庭。莫斯科大学生物学毕业后，曾经做过几年遗传学研究工作。这种人生经历使她对人的心理、生理发生了兴趣。上世纪70年代起，她开始文学创作，发表了一批具有自己特色并引起巨大社会反响的小说。小说《索尼奇卡》获1996年法国“梅迪契”外国小说奖，小说《美狄亚和她的孩子们》被评为俄罗斯“1996年文学事件”，而《库克茨基医生的病案》荣获俄罗斯2001年布克奖。如今，乌利茨卡娅的作品在俄罗斯和全世界拥有众多的读者。
